What's up with neighborhood blogs?

Posted at 12:49 pm by Elaine Helm

Seattle has seen an explosion of neighborhood blogs recently. An event at the Seattle Public Library in downtown on Thursday will explore this phenomenon and what it means for traditional news sources, civic engagement and local communities.

The event is sponsored by Seattle CityClub and moderated by Monica Guzman of the Seattle P-I, which hosts neighborhood blogs written by readers.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and the program starts at 6 p.m. It looks like there might even be a hands-on blogging session afterward, for anyone who's interested in getting started with blogging. Sign up for free at CityClub's site.

Where is Snohomish County's own neighborhood blog explosion? So far, I haven't seen it. Do you blog about where you live or have a local blog that you rely on? Post the links here and I'll feature them in an upcoming item. ...

Starting today, we're enabling comments on almost every story published on this site. Now you can add your thoughts, ask questions and converse with other people on just about any topic we cover, as long as you are a registered user.

Why do we require registration? We want to keep the conversation constructive, and experiences with other online forums have shown that people are more likely to engage each other civilly if they are required to use their names and a valid e-mail address.

You can review our complete guidelines for posting here, but most of them should be common sense. If you spot a comment that you find offensive, click the link next to it labeled "Request removal." We'll check it out and remove it if it violates our policy.

We won't remove a comment just because you disagree with it. If you disagree, feel free to post a reply.

Let me know if you have any questions about comments, either by commenting here or sending me an e-mail. Your feedback is always welcome. ...

Read, watch or listen: 3 ways to experience special project

Posted at 1:48 pm by Elaine Helm

Beginning Sunday, The Herald launched a special project by writer Scott North called "A Truth Beyond." The story is being released in chapters, both online and in the newspaper, and for the first time during my tenure here, we're providing several ways to experience the story.

The first is the most traditional for newspapers. Go to a special page for the project, put together by designer Doug Parry, to read each chapter of the story as it is released. The first four chapters are available today.

You can also watch a video presentation that serves as an overview for the series. The video was produced by reporter Krista J. Kapralos and narrated by Scott North, with photos from Kevin Nortz and Herald archives.

Finally, you can subscribe to the podcast feed for the series. Think of it like the book-on-tape version of the story, as read by reporter David Chircop. You can download the audio files to iTunes or to an RSS reader.

I'd love to hear from you if you read, watch or listen to the series. Leave a comment below or send me an e-mail to let me know what you think. ...
