Witnesses say they saw teens at vacant Marysville mill before fire

MARYSVILLE -- A group of teenagers was seen at a lumber mill in Marysville shortly before it went up in flames Friday evening.

Officials on Monday said they've deemed the fire suspicious, said Kristen Thorstenson, spokeswoman for the Marysville Fire District.

They have yet to determine a cause for the fire, which gutted the former Welco Lumber mill along Ebey Slough. Marysville police have joined the investigation.

The mill's roof collapsed during the fire, and a damage estimate is expected later today. No injuries were reported.

The mill was vacant, but officials say they have had problems with squatters and transients there before.
