The home front: Trashy extravagance
What: Separating your recyclables is a bitter easier with the fingerprint-proof rectangular recycler from Simplehuman, a Los Angeles housewares company. The can combines two trash buckets under one lid. The larger one, a black can, is for trash, while the narrower blue bucket holds recyclables.
Advantages:The rectangular recycler is the Porsche of trash cans, complete with air suspension shocks on the lid to prevent it from closing noisily. The design is sleek: a stainless steel exterior houses two dent-proof buckets, both of which have handles for easy removal. The can opens by way of a foot pedal, and the lid can be propped open for longer chores with a slide switch. Regular sized trash bags -- say, 8-gallon and 4-gallon bags -- can be used in the buckets, which are 7.8 gallons and 4.2 gallons. Finally, most trash cans hold 10 to 13 gallons, so this one won't take up extra space.
Limitations:Remember how this is the Porsche of trash cans? It's priced with that in mind: $179.99. Also, while the can totals 13 gallons in size, the individual buckets hold considerably less than that, meaning you may be toting out trash more often than usual.
Where: Simplehuman products are carried by Bed, Bath & Beyond and Lowe's. This can is also available at www.simplehuman.com or 877-988-7770.
