Machinists, Boeing to talk -- what do you think?

Boeing and the Machinists union have agreed to resume contract discussions with a federal mediator.

However, the strike, in its 33rd day, continues.

No word yet on when leaders for the two sides will begin negotiations.

From the Machinists:

Boeing returned to the bargaining table because you stayed united on the picket lines. It is important as we move forward that we continue to stay strong on the picket lines. That’s how we’re going to secure a contract that will settle this strike.


From Boeing spokesman Tim Healy:

"We agreed to pursue talks with a federal mediator. ... It's got to be an agreement that rewards the employees but allows the company to remain competitive."

Will these talks be successful? If so, what will either side give up?

Irrresponsible
To call a strike during an economic downturn was not a smart thing to do. I see that those singing the Union song are now calling those of us that disagreed with that course of action "scabs". As I recall we still live in a democracy and have the right to our own opinions.
From what I saw of the contract medical did go up slightly, but the plan covered more and the company gave raises to offset the increases.
The serviver benefit was pulled and a 4000 dollar increase was placed in our life insurance. If you want more for a spouse my suggestion is to buy private term life insurance.
Far as outsourcing is concerned that is a business decision made by the Company management, not by the Union bosses.

Machinist Contract
A line crosser (SCAB) is a person who has never stood for anything greater than themselves because, to them, there is nothing greater than themselves. I Identified some of the bloggers as such.
Since we needed 66 2/3 vote to strike, Boeing knew that they didn't have to make the contract any better than what it would take to affect one third of our membership. They knew that we wouldn't buy the contract. They didn't care. They just wanted the one third. Irreversible damage has been done this time.
Remember 1995 Boeing! Give us another bad contract and watch what happens!
