Apple slices

Posted at 4:51 pm by Eric Fetters

There's a reason Apple makes more online headlines in the average day than Microsoft does. Apple has more cachet as a "cool" company, and it tends to inspire more passion.

The double-edged sword, however, is that passion can be turned against you in a big way when things go wrong. Which is why there seems to be a deluge of headlines now like this.

Key quote: "Is something rotten at Apple? ... Is it possible that Steve Jobs' reality distortion field is finally weakening — that the scales have fallen from our eyes and we're now seeing that Apple's products are just as flawed and prone to failure as any other hardware? ... Well, not really. As Apple fans point out, people still love Apple," writes Slate.com's Farhad Manjoo.

It is true that the iPhone 3G is gathering complaints and at least one lawsuit over dropped calls and its overall speed in handling data.

But the company still leads the tech world, along with other consumer arenas, in customer satisfaction. And, as of recent weeks, Apple now is rivaling Google for the title of Silicon Valley's King, at least in terms of market capitalization.

Along with the incredible sales of its iPod products, I have a feelling many companies would love to have Apple's problems.
