Larry Hanson, community leader and former publisher of The Herald, has been selected as the interim president of United Way of Snohomish County.

“The board of directors is thrilled to have Larry step in while we conduct a search for a permanent replacement for outgoing president, Brent Stewart,” said John Gustafson, board chair.

Stewart recently accepted the position of president and chief professional officer for United Way of the Columbia-Willamette in Portland, Ore. His last day with the Snohomish County chapter was Feb. 20.

In partnership with United Way of America, the United Way of Snohomish County Board of Directors has begun a national search to find a permanent president. Candidate selection and interviews are planned later this spring. The board plans to hire a new president by the end of June.

Hanson, who retired from The Herald in February 2002 after a 45-year newspaper career, including 18 years as the company’s president and publisher, has a long history of community involvement.

He has served as president or chairman of the Everett Area Chamber of Commerce, Everett Rotary, Snohomish County Economic Development Council, United Way of Snohomish County, Workforce Development Council of Snohomish County, SnoNet, Healthy Communities Initiative and Snohomish County Needs Assessment.

Statewide, Hanson has been involved with the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Education Reform, Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board, Partnership for Learning Board and KCTS Public Television Advisory Board.

“When I was approached about serving as the interim president of our United Way, it didn’t take me long to say yes,” Hanson said. “I believe in the important work that our United Way does for our community and am honored to serve.”
