United Way picks new leader

SCBJ Staff

Carl Zapora, who leads a 20-state Midwest regional office for United Way of America, has been selected to take over as president of the Snohomish County chapter of United Way.

Spirit Awards given

During United Way of Snohomish County’s annual Spirit of Snohomish County breakfast in June, the business community was recognized for its contributions to the community through its work with nonprofit organizations.

Among those honored were Sean Barrett, director of the Disability Resource Center, Spirit of Snohomish County Award to an Individual; Kimberly-Clark Corp., Spirit of Snohomish County Award to a Company; Jason Redrup, a member of the Machinist Union District No. 751, Spirit of Snohomish County Award — Labor; and Carol Nelson, president of Cascade Bank, Spirit of Snohomish County Reeves-Sievers Founder’s Award.

He replaces Brent Stewart, who left in February to take a similar job with United Way in Portland, Ore. Stewart had been the organization’s president for nearly five years.

Zapora, who has more than 20 years of experience in various United Way posts, officially takes over as the chapter’s new president July 12, spokesman Dan Klusman said.

Local United Way volunteers considered slightly more than 100 applicants for the job.

“He showed the scope of experience we were looking for and a thorough understanding of what it takes to run a United Way,” said John Gustafson, who heads the local United Way board.

Zapora has been director of United Way’s 20-state Midwest regional office, based in Chicago, since 1999. Last year, contributions in that region hit $1.8 billion, Gustafson said.

Prior to that, he was executive director of the Midland, Texas, United Way. His first job with the organization was campaign director of the Reading, Pa., chapter from 1978 to 1982.

He has a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Albright College in Reading, Pa., and did graduate studies in marketing at Temple University in Philadelphia.
