Amtrak
begins commuter service at Everett Station

Amtrak trains began
servicing Everett Station in November, ending a run with the Bond Street
station near the city’s waterfront and marking another milestone in the
development of the regional transportation hub.
A ceremony was held
Nov. 12 to mark the transition, with the Empire Builder, a Seattle-to-Chicago
line, pulling into the station in the late afternoon.
With its arrival,
Amtrak joins Greyhound, Community Transit and Everett Transit at the transportation
center. And Sound Transit’s Sounder commuter rail train, with one round
trip a day from Everett to Seattle, is still expected to begin at the
station in December 2003.
Since opening in
February at 3201 Smith Ave., Everett Station has become home not only
to transportation agencies, but also to the University Center, WorkSource
Everett and the Everett Station Cafe. And more than 60 events have been
held in the station’s fourth-floor meeting and banquet room.
“The public has been
so supportive of Everett Station and the multimodes of transportation
there,” city spokeswoman Dale Preboski said recently. “And having Amtrak
arrive now is clearly an important piece of that.”
