State stats: Job growth
up in county in June

By SCBJ Staff

Employers in Snohomish County, including Boeing, are stepping up their hiring rate, adding 2,600 jobs during June, pushing the county’s jobless rate from 5 percent in May to 4.9 percent, according to the state Department of Employment Security.

Karen Lee, employment security commissioner, said the state’s economy “is on solid footing, and the near-term job outlook is quite positive.”

Local job growth showed the addition of 800 in local government, 700 in the leisure and hospitality industry, 600 in construction, 600 in manufacturing, 400 at bars and restaurants, and 200 in retail services. Of the 600 manufacturing jobs, 300 were in aerospace, an industry that has been rebuilding as orders for planes and aircraft maintenance increase.

During the past 12 months, the Snohomish County work force has grown by 8,500 jobs, including 3,000 in the aerospace sector. The county labor force is estimated at 341,200, with 324,400 holding jobs and 16,800 looking for work.
